What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a natural energy healing practice that originated in Japan in the early twentieth century. The word itself comes from two Japanese words: “Rei”, meaning Universal, and “Ki”, meaning Life Force Energy. Together, they describe the Universal Life Force Energy that flows through every living thing: plants, animals, people, the planet itself. 🌱🦁😄🗺️

As such, Reiki is a form of energy healing. As a matter of energy healing takes many forms. Well, when we think about it, there’s nothing but energy to heal with! The energy from the sun heals. The energy from food heals. The energy within your body heals. And that means, the energy from others can heal, too!

Therefore, a Reiki practitioner channels the Universal Life Force Energy – aka Reiki (through intention, presence, and learned technique) to support healing on all levels: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. It’s non-invasive, deeply relaxing, and widely used as a complementary healing practice alongside conventional medicine.

The most important thing to understand about Reiki is that it’s not something the practitioner “does” to you. It’s something that flows — through them, to you, guided by the intelligence of the universal life force itself. The practitioner is a channel, not the source!

And here’s what I personally find so beautiful about this: anyone can learn to become that channel. You don’t need any particular spiritual background or special gift. You simply need willingness, an open heart, and a Reiki attunement 💖 (More on that below!)

Where did Reiki come from? 🌏

It’s hard to say there’s actually a human “creator” of Reiki – because, well, it’s everything (remember, it’s the Universal Life Force Energy!). However, the Reiki technique (as we know it) today was originally developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1920s, following a profound spiritual experience. Usui Sensei was a dedicated student of spiritual traditions, and what his methodology turned out to be more than just a healing technique, it’s become an easy and achievable way to live with greater peace, compassion, and awareness.

From Japan, Reiki gradually made its way to the wider world, Today it’s practised in over 150 countries, used in hospitals, hospices, wellness centres, and private practices everywhere 🌍

One of the things I love about Reiki is how universal it is. To me, Reiki isn’t a strict methodology with tight and rigid guidelines. It simply opens the door to a deep knowing that love and healing energy are available to all of us

What does Reiki feel like? 🌀

I get this question a lot, and rightly so! After all, how in the world do you feel the Universal Life Force Energy, right? 💖

I must be honest though and say: Reiki feels different for everyone. And the reason why it feels different is because each of us have our own unique way of experiencing life – how you perceive something comes down to your own energy, your history, what you’re carrying, and how open you are to receiving. No two sessions feel exactly the same.

With all that said, I’m not going to leave you handing! There are sensations that recur, which will help give you an idea of what it feels like:

  • Warmth 🥰 A gentle, spreading warmth through the body — sometimes in one area, sometimes everywhere. Often felt even without physical touch
  • Tingling or pulsing ✨ A light buzzing or vibrating sensation, like energy moving through the body
  • Deep calm 🌿 A profound sense of peace and relaxation — like your nervous system finally exhaled
  • Emotional release 💧 Tears sometimes come — not from sadness, but from release. Old emotions surfacing gently to be let go
  • Simply stillness 🙏 Sometimes there are no dramatic sensations at all — just quiet, and a sense that something has settled. This is equally valid and equally beautiful

Irrespective of whether you felt a “tidal wave” of emotions get released 🌊 or just experienced a really calm and relaxing session: it happened. Reiki works whether you feel it or not.  And a lot of times, the shifts come when the recipient least expects it (when your ego-mind has let its guard down) in the days or weeks afterward.

The Five Reiki Principles 🌸

As I’ve hinted to already, Reiki isn’t only a healing technique, it’s also a (simple yet profound) philosophy for living. At the heart of that philosophy are the Five Reiki Principles.

Each principle begins with the same beautiful phrase: “Just for today…” That framing is intentional. It doesn’t ask you to be perfect forever. It’s asking you to intend… “Just for today” and that’s something any of us can do 🌈

  • Just for today, I will not be angry
  • Just for today, I will not worry
  • Just for today, I am grateful
  • Just for today, I will do my work with diligence
  • Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing

Again, these aren’t rules to follow perfectly — life is meant to be imperfect. It’s in the recognition, understanding, and overcoming of our challenges that makes life so rewarding! So, if over time, integrating these principles into your life changes the way you move through the world, that – in and of itself – is worth it!

I go into more detail about them here ➡️ What Are the Five Reiki Principles? 🌸 And How to Use Them

What are the Reiki levels?

Reiki training is structured around 3 core levels: Level 1, Level 2, and Master Level. This structure is there to helps the student advance forward, ensuring they’ve covered the basics first before moving onto the more advanced techniques.

Level 1 incorporates the “foundations” of the practice – learning the history, concepts and “theory”, as well as focuses on self-healing.  Level 2 teaches a majority of the symbols and goes on to explain how you channel the Universal Life Force Energy to help others – in person and at a distance.

Finally, there’s the Master Level – the crowning level where you united all your prior experience with more advanced techniques and symbols. If you’re keen to dive into more detail about each level, read through my post here ➡️ Reiki Levels Explained

Yes! You can learn Reiki online! Traditionally everything – including Reiki – has always been taught “in person” because that was the only means by which teachers could instruct their students. As the world has changed and technology has evolved, so has the ability to learn from anyone, anywhere, and at anytime.

What this does is now allow students the ability to choose what suits them best: either “in person” or online. As you’ll learn in the course, the Universal Life Force Energy is everywhere, it’s part of us, and we are a part of it. Because it is not bound by space or time when speaking in an energy healing capacity – neither are we. This means there is no distance between us. As such, Reiki can be learned and done in-person or at a distance. And that stands for Student Attunement Ceremonies, too!

Yes! Attunements can be done via distance! How? Because Reiki is energy healing – and energy healing has no boundaries or time-restraints – there are no limitations on the ability to attune students from afar. Reiki healing can be done at a distance which means the ceremonies can by done at a distance too!

To further clarify, Melissa connects energetically with students (after they have confirmed their ceremony date and time with her) and performs the ceremony completely remotely. After the ceremony is done, Melissa emails all the information about it (date, time frame and so on) to each student, including any observations she made.

Yes! You can ask questions throughout the course! Melissa makes herself available to help guide her students at any point during their learning journey. Students can directly ask Melissa questions in two different ways: either (1) within the course itself using our “Lecture Discussions” feature. This allows Melissa and the student to converse within the course content itself.

And (2) via the Reiki Student Community, which allows students to chat with Melissa – and with other students if they wish – to ask questions, share experiences, find practice buddies, and more! In either scenario, Melissa will respond and converse directly with students there.
