It’s no wonder, with our technology today, that more of us are starting (or finishing) their Reiki journey online! And that’s because a well-designed online Reiki certification course gives you everything you need to become a confident, accredited Reiki practitioner, without needing to travel to a class or work around someone else’s schedule. As more barriers are removed from learning this loving modality, it enables more of us to lift the vibration of this world like never before! 💫

So you know you want to start this journey, but now the question is – how do you know which course is right for you? That’s a great question and my hope is to answer it in a way which helps you choose an online Reiki certification course that resonates with you! ✨

What Is Reiki Certification? 🏅

Reiki is essentially a form of energy healing. The techniques were conceptualized in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui, of whom practitioners refer to as Usui Sensei. A solid Reiki certification course will teach you the foundations, methods, symbols, and practice steps – as well as “attune” you to Reiki energy.

There are three main levels of Reiki certification:

Level 1 (Shoden) — The Foundations
This level introduces you to the history and principles of Reiki and self-healing techniques. It’s all about understanding, developing, and balancing your personal energy flow.

Level 2 (Okuden) — Practitioner Level
At this level we deepen your practice while you begin to learn some of the Reiki symbols, which help with the intentions to channel loving energy. You’ll start to practice with others during this phase.

Reiki Master, or Level 3 (Shinpiden) — Master Level
Traditionally, the Master level (or Level 3) is the highest certification in Reiki. By this point you’ll have covered all the symbols, more advanced techniques, and have practiced with varying scenarios from “in person” to “distance” sessions.

Regulations? Accreditation? Associations? 🤔

One of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of choosing a Reiki course is the incorrect belief that there are government regulations on how it should be taught, so it’s worth taking a moment to clarify the confusion.

Certification and accreditation for Reiki courses is not regulated by any government body. There is no single universal standard that all courses must meet. Instead, there are various professional accreditation bodies (remember, these are not government bodies), each with their own criteria for what a valid Reiki certification looks like to them.

Accreditation bodies are usually third-party organizations that vet a course to ensure it’s well-structured, meets minimum quality standards, is legitimate and relevant, and potentially recognized by employers. Remember, all of these standards are set by that accreditation body themselves – so they will vary significantly from place to place. Remember: Accreditation bodies “accredit” a course curriculum or school.

Associations and membership organizations are usually different to Accreditation bodies because they’re not vetting the course or school; they’re looking to see if the person – the holder of a certain qualification – meets their requirements to become one of their members. Associations and membership organizations usually have a “Code of Conduct” which its members prescribe to and they’ll often have pre-set requirements in order to join, such as holding certain types of qualifications.  Remember: Associations and memberships are organizations which have members that share some common purpose or bond.

Irrespective of which – be it an Association, Membership Organization, or Accreditation Body – some will prefer in-person training models while others will recognise that Reiki is inherently an energetic practice that transcends physical distance, thus will honour online and distance learning and attunements.

There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to learn when the objective is the same: sending love & light to help yourself and others. So the choice really comes down to how you as the future Reiki healer prefer to learn.

For those wanting to do Reiki as a career, holding an accredited Reiki certification/s will allow you to obtain liability insurance to start your own practice! 🥰 Generally speaking, energy healers (including Reiki practitioners) only need to be (1) qualified by certification, (2) have liability insurance, and (3) be operate as a legal business and/or sole trader in their country/state to practice. 

Being a member of any specific association or membership program is not normally required for working energy healers (including Reiki practitioners), but they might be if you’re also offering massage, beauty therapies, or any other number of government regulated services.

But for energy healers/Reiki practitioners only, association/memberships are usually more of a benefit – not a requirement – in that they offer a professional appearance and possibly access to special insurance offerings.

How to Choose an Online Reiki Course? 🤔

So with all that said, when trying to decide whether an online Reiki course is good for you, the most important questions to ask are:

  • Has the course been designed to suit your lifestyle needs and your learning style?
  • Do you resonate with the school and instructor/s?
  • Does the school and instructors provide ongoing support?
  • Is the course recognised by an accreditation body? (This means it’s been vetted by a third party)
  • Will the certification be accepted by insurance providers if you intend to practise professionally?

A reputable online Reiki school should be able to answer all of these questions with confidence.

Yes! You can learn Reiki online! Traditionally everything – including Reiki – has always been taught “in person” because that was the only means by which teachers could instruct their students. As the world has changed and technology has evolved, so has the ability to learn from anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. 
 
What this does is now allow students the ability to choose what suits them best: either “in person” or online. As you’ll learn in the course, the Universal Life Force Energy is everywhere, it’s part of us, and we are a part of it. Because it is not bound by space or time when speaking in an energy healing capacity – neither are we. This means there is no distance between us. As such, Reiki can be learned and done in-person or at a distance. And that stands for Student Attunement Ceremonies, too!

Yes! Attunements can be done via distance! How? Because Reiki is energy healing – and energy healing has no boundaries or time-restraints – there are no limitations on the ability to attune students from afar. Reiki healing can be done at a distance which means the ceremonies can by done at a distance too!

To further clarify, Melissa connects energetically with students (after they have confirmed their ceremony date and time with her) and performs the ceremony completely remotely. After the ceremony is done, Melissa emails all the information about it (date, time frame and so on) to each student, including any observations she made.

Yes! You can ask questions throughout the course! Melissa makes herself available to help guide her students at any point during their learning journey. Students can directly ask Melissa questions in two different ways: either (1) within the course itself using our “Lecture Discussions” feature. This allows Melissa and the student to converse within the course content itself.

And (2) via the Reiki Student Community, which allows students to chat with Melissa – and with other students if they wish – to ask questions, share experiences, find practice buddies, and more! In either scenario, Melissa will respond and converse directly with students there.
