More people are turning to online study to begin their Reiki journey, and with good reason. A well-designed online Reiki certification course gives you everything you need to become a confident, accredited Reiki practitioner, without needing to travel to a class or work around someone else’s schedule.
But with so many courses available, how do you know which one is right for you? And what does “accredited” actually mean when it comes to Reiki?
This guide answers both of those questions, and gives you a clear checklist for choosing an online Reiki certification course you can trust.
What Is Reiki Certification? 🏅
Reiki is an energy healing practice developed in Japan in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui. A Reiki certification course teaches you the techniques, symbols, and philosophies of the practice – and, crucially, “attunes” you to Reiki energy.
There are three main levels of Reiki certification:
Level 1 (Shoden) — The Foundations
Level 1 introduces you to the history and principles of Reiki and self-healing techniques. This level is about developing your own personal energy work and beginning to heal from within.
Level 2 (Okuden) — Practitioner Level
Level 2 deepens your practice and introduces some of the Reiki symbols that expand your ability to channel energy. At this level, you’ll be confident offering Reiki sessions to others and begin a professional practice if you choose.
Level 3 / Reiki Master (Shinpiden) — Master Level
The Master level is the highest certification in Reiki. It covers the Master level symbols, advanced techniques, and more. Completing your Reiki Master certification is a significant milestone — it allows you to fully step into your role as a Reiki healer and, if you choose, to build a professional practice or teach students of your own.

Regulations? Accreditation? Associations? 🤔
One of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of choosing a Reiki course is the incorrect belief that there are government regulations on how it should be taught, so it’s worth taking a moment to understand clearly.
Certification and accreditation for Reiki courses is not regulated by any government body. There is no single universal standard that all courses must meet. Instead, there are various professional accreditation bodies (remember, these are not government bodies), each with their own criteria for what a valid Reiki certification looks like to them.
Accreditation bodies are usually third-party organizations that vet a course to ensure it’s well-structured, meets minimum quality standards, is legitimate and relevant, and recognized by potential employers. Remember, all of these standards are set by that accreditation body themselves – so they will vary significantly from place to place. Remember: Accreditation bodies “accredit” a course curriculum or school.
Associations and membership organization are usually different to Accreditation bodies because they’re not vetting a course, they’re looking to see if the person – holder of a certain qualification – can become one of their members. Associations and membership organizations usually have a “Code of Conduct” which its members prescribe to and they’ll often have pre-set requirements in order to join, such as holding certain types of qualifications. Remember: Associations and memberships are organizations which have members that share some common purpose or bond.
Irrespective of which – be it an Association, Membership Organization, or Accreditation Body – some will prefer in-person training models while others will recognise that Reiki is inherently an energetic practice that transcends physical distance – thus will honour online and distance learning and attunements.
There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to learn when the objective is the same: sending love & light to help yourself and others. So the choice really comes down to how you as the future Reiki healer prefer to learn.
For those wanting to do Reiki as a career, holding an accredited Reiki certification/s will allow you to obtain liability insurance to start your own practice! 🥰 Generally speaking, energy healers (including Reiki practitioners) only need to be (1) qualified by certification, (2) have liability insurance, and (3) be operating as a legal business and/or sole trader in their country/state to practice.
Being a member of any specific association or membership program is not normally required for working energy healers (including Reiki practitioners), but they might be if you’re also offering massage, beauty therapies, or any other number of government regulated services.
But for energy healers/Reiki practitioners only, association/memberships are usually more of a benefit – not a requirement – in that they offer a professional appearance and possibly access to special insurance offerings.
How to Choose an Online Reiki Course? 🤔
So with all that said, when evaluating whether an online Reiki course is good for you, the most important questions to ask are:
- Has the course been designed to suit your lifestyle needs and learning style?
- Do you resonate with the school and instructors?
- Does the school and instructors provide ongoing support?
- Is the course recognised by a professional accreditation body? (This means it’s been vetted by a third party)
- Will the certification be accepted by insurance providers if you intend to practise professionally?
- Are the instructor’s Reiki credentials documented?
A reputable online Reiki school should be able to answer all of these questions clearly and confidently.

Can you learn Reiki online?
Can Reiki Attunement Ceremonies be done at a distance?
Yes! Attunements can be done via distance! How? Because Reiki is energy healing – and energy healing has no boundaries or time-restraints – there are no limitations on the ability to attune students from afar. Reiki healing can be done at a distance which means the ceremonies can by done at a distance too!
To further clarify, Melissa connects energetically with students (after they have confirmed their ceremony date and time with her) and performs the ceremony completely remotely. After the ceremony is done, Melissa emails all the information about it (date, time frame and so on) to each student, including any observations she made.
Can I ask questions while I'm learning?
Yes! You can ask questions throughout the course! Melissa makes herself available to help guide her students at any point during their learning journey. Students can directly ask Melissa questions in two different ways: either (1) within the course itself using our “Lecture Discussions” feature. This allows Melissa and the student to converse within the course content itself.
And (2) via the Reiki Student Community, which allows students to chat with Melissa – and with other students if they wish – to ask questions, share experiences, find practice buddies, and more! In either scenario, Melissa will respond and converse directly with students there.
