It all happens for a reason.
About a decade ago, I was perusing the aisles of an old bookstore. I finished looking at a certain section then decided to make may way to another aisle. As walked, I could hear the creeky floor boards under my feet.
Then suddenly, something (from my right) flew out in front of me and landed on the ground, causing me to nearly jump back. Naturally, I looked down at where this “thing” had landed.
The incredible jumping book!
When my eyes focused on the object on the floor, I saw the words:ย “Vision and Acceptance“.ย This “thing” was a book, which had somehow gotten itself off the bookshelf, landed face-up and open to a page of importance.
What’s more, the page opposite wasย folded over – and not by someone. It had to have been folded during manufacturing because the page was not cut to the right size when you go to unfold it.
I can see the “rational explanation” as to how this book found its way into my hands: the floorboards flexed just enough to make the bookshelf move just enough to allow a book, which must have been sitting on the edge of the shelf just enough, fall to the floor.
The spine of the book wasย just heavy enough to allow it to land in a manner where it opened, and the folded page wasย just positioned perfectly enoughย to allow the book to open where it did.
But if any of you know me, you know that – despite this “rational coincidence” – I believe this book was meant for me. It all happens for a reason. So clearly, I scooped it up and took it to the register to purchase without a second thought.
So what was the incredible jumping book?ย Dan Millman’s “The Life You Were Born to Live: A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose” (for those in Australia, click here)
What's your birth number?
I don’t have any formal training with birth numbers or their meanings. But I’ve always found this topic fascinating. Dan Millman’s book has been so insightful,ย since it made its ceremonious entry into my life, that I decided to start sharing some of its wisdom with my students.
Now, I’m sure there are different ways and technique to figure out one’s birth number. So please don’t take this as the “only way” to work out your birth number or your life’s purpose. I’m just sharing what I learned from Dan Millman’s book.
Essentially, you just need to add up all the digits of your birthday. Then once you have that first number, you then add those numbers up to create your second number.
For example, if your birthday is 22 October 1994 you would add up: 2 + 2 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 28. So 28 is your first number.ย Then you add up 2 + 8 = 10, making 10 your second number. In this example, your birth number would then be: 28/10.
Here’s another example, a birthday of 5 February 2005. You would add up: 0 + 5 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 5 = 14. Your first number is 14.ย Then you would add up 1 + 4 = 5. Making your second number 5.ย In this example, your birth number would then be: 14/5.
I’m a 34/7ย and just in the introductory section of my number, it said I’m here to “harmonize apparent opposites and to blend practicality and mysticism, out and inner experience, flesh and spirit, worldly business and spiritual pursuits“.
It goes on to say that those with my birth number “sometimes accomplish this through a spiritual business… for example, selling books or teaching seminars” around the topic of spirituality or personal growth.ย As you may guess, this little snapshot is pretty accurate, but so is the rest of chapter on my number!
What do the numbers mean?
As I mentioned earlier, I’m not an expert in this field. So I’m just going to share with you the “core” meanings of each number. If you’d like to dive deeper into Dan Millman’s book, I highly recommend you grab a copy to learn more:

But for now, here are what the basic meanings for the numbers are:
1 – Creativity and Confidence
11 – Double Creativity and Confidence
2 – Cooperation and Balance
12 – Creative Cooperation
3 – Expression and Sensitivity
4 – Stability and Process
5 – Freedom and Discipline
6 – Vision and Acceptance
7 – Trust and Openness
8 – Abundance and Power
9 – Integrity and Wisdom
So, when referencing my birth number (34/7) to my life purpose, I look at the numbers 3, 4 and 7. That’s Expression and Sensitivity, Stability and Process, and Trust and Openness. The first number is my most dominant one (3), followed by the 4 and then the 7
