What is this "attunement" thing? 😆
If you’ve been researching Reiki, you’ve almost certainly come across the word “attunement” — and if you’re anything like most of my students, it may have left you with a few questions…
- What exactly is it?
- What happens during one?
- And if you’re learning online, can an attunement really happen at a distance?
These are brilliant questions and I’m so glad you’re asking them. Let’s explore 🌈
What's a Reiki Attunement? 🌟
A Reiki attunement is the energetic process (what we call a “ceremony”) that’s performed by a Reiki Master Teacher. In that ceremony, the Master Teacher helps your energy “open up” so you can channel the Universal Life Force Energy, also known as Reiki 🌀, in a balanced way.
Think of it as a kind of tuning: just as a radio needs to be tuned to receive a particular frequency, an attunement tunes your energy body to the frequency of Reiki 📻
Before an attunement, some sensitive or intuitive people may already be able to feel or sense energy — but after one, their gifts will be heightened alongside being able to consciously channel healing energy with intention.
And for those who weren’t sensitive to energies before hand are now at the perfect starting block to cultivate their innate skill (and innate it is for everyone) 🌱 As you can see, this step is what can help transform someone from a curious learner into a genuine Reiki practitioner.
The Reiki Student Attunement Ceremony is not something you do yourself — it must be facilitated by someone who has already been attuned to the Reiki Master level. And yes, as I’ll explain shortly, it can absolutely happen at a distance 😉
What Happens During a Reiki Attunement Ceremony? 🕊️
Each Reiki Master Teacher has their own process for performing an attunement, which may draw on specific symbols, intention-setting, and ceremonial steps.
The ceremony itself is typically quiet and meditative in nature 🧘 There are various elements included, and steps performed, as part of the ceremony – all done by myself as the Reiki Master Teacher. The student only has one task: to be open to receiving loving energy 💖 I explain these more when I’m organizing the date and time with each student.
But in sum, my Distance Reiki Student Attunement Ceremony process is as follows:
- Once you’re enrolled, we’ll organize and confirm your ceremony date and time
- I provide explanations, preparation suggestions, and some tips on what to expect (during and after) when we organize the ceremony. But in short, I encourage students to find a quiet, comfortable space during your ceremony time — to sit, breathe, and simply be open to receiving
- Before and during the ceremony, I avoid energetic interference as much as possible. This means I have little to no electronics running during that entire time period – so there is no need to be online and there is no video link to attend
- At the agreed time, I connect with you energetically and perform the full ceremony remotely (via distance)
- Afterwards, usually the next day, I email a full account of the ceremony — the date, time, the duration, and any observations or impressions I received during the process.
After a ceremony, some can experience a “Spiritual Detoxing” or a shifting of their own internal energy as they get used to this new, open flow of love. Some won’t experience anything at all, while others will feel a lot for several weeks. If and what you feel comes down to your energy, your life experience, and your journey – there’s no right or wrong here 🤗
But during this post-attunement time period (typically referred to as 21-days, but it can be shorter or longer), your energy body integrates itself, and old patterns may rise to the surface to be released. This can manifest in all sorts of ways: heightened emotion, vivid dreams, a deeper need for rest, or a beautiful sense of clarity and calm.
Some students feel sensations during their attunement — warmth, tingling, a sense of peace, or emotional release. Others feel very little in the moment but notice shifts in the days that follow. Both experiences are completely normal and valid. Reiki works in its own timing, and the attunement always lands exactly as it’s meant to 💫
Furthermore, some Reiki courses attune students separately at each level, requiring multiple ceremonies spread across weeks or months (even years). There’s no single “correct” post-attunement experience. I encourage all of my students to treat this period gently — to stay hydrated, rest when needed, spend time in nature if they can, and journal if they feel called to. I’m available to answer questions throughout this process, and my students have access to the Reiki Student Community where they can share experiences and connect with others on the same journey.
Can a Reiki Attunement really happen via distance? 🌍
Yes 💯— and this is one of the most common misconceptions about online Reiki training. Distance attunements are not a modern workaround. They’re grounded in one of Reiki’s own foundational principles.
In Reiki, the Distance symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen) is associated with the ability to transcend time and space — to send healing energy across any distance. This same principle that allows Reiki practitioners to offer distant healing sessions to clients also allows Reiki Master Teachers to attune students remotely.
I’ve been attuning students via distance since I founded Natural Healer™ in 2014. In over a decade of doing this work, I’ve witnessed thousands of students step into their Reiki practice through a distance ceremony — many of whom describe profound and moving experiences. The physical location of student and teacher has never diminished the power of what takes place ✨💗

Can you learn Reiki online?
Can Reiki Attunement Ceremonies be done at a distance?
Yes! Attunements can be done via distance! How? Because Reiki is energy healing – and energy healing has no boundaries or time-restraints – there are no limitations on the ability to attune students from afar. Reiki healing can be done at a distance which means the ceremonies can by done at a distance too!
To further clarify, Melissa connects energetically with students (after they have confirmed their ceremony date and time with her) and performs the ceremony completely remotely. After the ceremony is done, Melissa emails all the information about it (date, time frame and so on) to each student, including any observations she made.
Can I ask questions while I'm learning?
Yes! You can ask questions throughout the course! Melissa makes herself available to help guide her students at any point during their learning journey. Students can directly ask Melissa questions in two different ways: either (1) within the course itself using our “Lecture Discussions” feature. This allows Melissa and the student to converse within the course content itself.
And (2) via the Reiki Student Community, which allows students to chat with Melissa – and with other students if they wish – to ask questions, share experiences, find practice buddies, and more! In either scenario, Melissa will respond and converse directly with students there.
