My aim is to share my heart-felt thoughts about how Reiki can improve mental health, and to explore what Reiki can genuinely offer to help those in your same situation.

Please note though, I am not a doctor, psychologist, or professional counsellor – I’m a Usui Reiki Master Teacher (2014) with decades of experience, and not just in using Reiki to help others, but to help myself, too.
I express this with confidence because my own experience – both personally and with my students and clients – confirms 100% that Reiki is a fully natural, gentle complementary practice. But it should not be considered a substitute for professional mental health care.

Now, with all that said, let’s talk about what Reiki can offer to bolster your well-being…
The mind, the body, and your energy 🌱
Reiki works with the understanding that the body, mind, and spirit are not separate things, they’re one deeply connected system. Thus, when something is out of balance in one area, it will be felt in another.
Stress, overwhelm, sadness, that persistent low hum of anxiety, these aren’t just sensations “in our heads”, they live in the physical body, too. Those negative emotions change the way we breathe, the quality of our sleep, and our ability to find joy in ordinary things. From an energetic perspective, they often manifest themselves in areas where our life force energy has become blocked, depleted, or stuck.
Working with that energy, through Reiki, creates space where there was once tightness. It introduces calm where there was noise. None of this happens overnight, but as a companion to our healing efforts, it’s genuinely powerful. 🌟

The 5 Reiki Principles as a daily mental health practice 🌸
One of the things I love about Reiki is that it’s goes beyond a “healing” technique and into a solid philosophy for living. At the heart of it sits the Five Reiki Principles, which I honestly believe are one of the most (quietly) powerful mental health tools I’ve ever come across!
Each principle begins with: “Just for today…” And that framing is critical to everything:
- “Just for today, I will not worry”
- “Just for today, I will not be angry”
- “Just for today, I am grateful”
- “Just for today, I will do my work with diligence”
- “Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing”
These principles don’t ask you to heal everything, or to be perfect. They simply ask: can you try, just for today? And that’s something any of us can do — we can try, even on our hardest days.
Working with these principles can help us begin to shift the way we relate to their own thoughts: swapping judgment for more presence.

What Reiki can feel like for the mind 🌀
Understandably, many people have expectations that Reiki is something used to help a physical issue, so they’re often surprised by how much the mind responds!
Many of my students and healing recipients describe a profound sense of mental quiet during their Attunement Ceremony or session, the thoughts are still there, but they’re no longer as loud. Others experience emotional release: tears that come – not from sadness – but from the relief of finally being allowed to exhale after holding on for so long… 🫂
Sometimes those “exhale” effects don’t show up during a session, but in the days that follow. I’ve seen time and time again how Reiki can help many sleep more deeply. From there, the flow-on effects us in many ways: being less reactive to things that would usually trigger a spiral, moving through difficulties with more steadiness than before. Everyone’s experience is a bit different but they’re all valid. 🙏

What Reiki isn’t (and why that’s OK) 💫
Reiki won’t erase the hard things. That’s not what it’s about. It’s not going to magically fix things in life nor replace the support of a good friend, therapist or doctor.
But here’s what I do believe, from my own practice and from years of witnessing students: Reiki creates the space and conditions for healing. It reminds the nervous system to return to rest; it shows us how to slow down; if offers a regular, gentle practice of turning inward — toward yourself with kindness — and that is incredibly powerful healing that can change everything, as it’s repeated over time.
When we treat ourselves as worthy of care, something shifts within us… we remember, “Ah! That’s right, I am worthy of this feeling” 🌱
