Reiki Levels Explained 🌟 What’s the Difference Between Level 1, 2, and Master?

Understanding Reiki 🌀

If you’re new to Reiki, the idea of “levels” can feel a little confusing at first! Is Level 1 enough? Do you need to do all three? What does Reiki Master actually mean? And do you have to complete them separately, one at a time?

These are great questions and I’m going to answer every single one of them here. By the end of this post, you’ll have a clear, friendly understanding of what each level involves, what you’ll be able to do after each one, and how the Natural Healer™ course fits into all of this 💖

Reiki Level 1 🌱 The foundations

This level is traditionally called “Shoden” which is a Japanese word meaning first teachings and that’s exactly what Level 1 is. It’s your beautiful beginning. 🌱 During Level 1 you’ll learn:

  • The history of Reiki and Mikao Usui’s original teachings
  • The Five Reiki Principles and how to work with them in daily life
  • How to channel Reiki energy for self-healing
  • The hand positions for self-treatment
  • Beginning techniques for offering Reiki to others

Level 1 is fundamentally about turning inward. It’s about developing your own personal practice, healing from within, and beginning to cultivate sensitivity to energy. Many people find Level 1 alone to be genuinely life-changing, not because of anything dramatic, but because of the quiet, consistent shifts that come from regular self-healing practice 🌟

Reiki Level 2 🔑 Practitioner level

Traditional called “Okuden”, which means inner teachings, Level 2 is where your Reiki practice genuinely deepens and expands 🌀 At Level 2, you’ll learn:

  • The Reiki symbols – the tools that help you amplify, focus, and direct the energy
  • How to use the Power symbol for stronger energy channelling
  • How to use the Emotional symbol for mental and emotional healing
  • The Distance symbol which allows you to send Reiki across time and space

Level 2 is the practitioner level. After completing it, you have the knowledge and skills to offer Reiki sessions to others confidently.

The Distance symbol in particular opens up something extraordinary: the ability to send healing energy to people in other locations, other time zones, or even to past or future events.

This is also the principle behind distance attunements — which I explain in detail in What Is a Reiki Attunement? if you’d like to dive deeper on that topic 💖

Reiki Level 3 — Reiki Master 💎 The highest level

This level is traditionally called “Shinpiden” which means deep teachings. But to be clear, the Reiki Master level is not about ego or status, and is accessible for anyone who’s willing to make the effort to achieve it. This level allows you to step fully into your role as a loving healing presence in the world.

At Reiki Master level, you’ll learn:

  • The Master symbol — an incredibly high vibrational and cleansing symbol
  • The Grounding symbol, which can help the practitioner “ground” their focus as well as finalize a healing session
  • Advanced healing techniques and applications
  • How to work with Reiki at the highest level of intention and skill
  • A deeper understanding of the energetic and spiritual foundations of the practice

Reiki Master is the highest tier of certification in the traditional Usui system. Achieving it means you’ve committed to the full depth of the practice by opening doors that the earlier levels don’t.

Completing the Reiki Master level allows you to teach others. However, because there is so much involved in my Reiki 1, 2 and Master course, it would be overwhelming to include teaching and attuning methods too. That and not everyone wants to become a teacher! Thus, for those students who have the desire to teach others, I’ve “broken” out the teaching component in my separate Advanced Reiki Master Teacher course.

Do I need to do all three levels? 🤔

Not necessarily, but I’ve found that doing all three levels allows you to have the most fulfilling experience, and I’ll tell you why.

If your goal is purely personal — self-healing, using Reiki in your daily life, sharing it informally with family and friends — then Level 1 and Level 2 together give you a deeply rich and complete personal practice.

But if you have any sense that you might want to:

  • Unlock your full potential
  • Hold the fullest possible depth of the practice
  • Combine Reiki with other healing modalities
  • Have the fullest and richest experience that Reiki has to offer

…then achieving Reiki Master level is absolutely worth completing.

And that’s why my course here on Natural Healer™ includes all three levels in a single programme! There’s no reason to stop halfway when I can open the door completely for your entire journey 😊

Can I do all three levels in one course? 📋

Yes! And that’s exactly what the Natural Healer™ Reiki 1, 2 and Master course is designed to do.

Some Reiki courses separate the levels, requiring you to enrol multiple times, wait between stages, or attend separate in-person workshops for each level. At Natural Healer™, all three levels are covered in one self-paced programme — no waiting periods, no separate enrolments, and one Distance Student Reiki Attunement Ceremony that covers all three levels at once.

You move through the course at your own pace. Some students work through all three levels within a few weeks. Others take several months. And with lifetime access, there’s genuinely no rush — the course will always be there when you’re ready 🌟

Yes! You can learn Reiki online! Traditionally everything – including Reiki – has always been taught “in person” because that was the only means by which teachers could instruct their students. As the world has changed and technology has evolved, so has the ability to learn from anyone, anywhere, and at anytime.

What this does is now allow students the ability to choose what suits them best: either “in person” or online. As you’ll learn in the course, the Universal Life Force Energy is everywhere, it’s part of us, and we are a part of it. Because it is not bound by space or time when speaking in an energy healing capacity – neither are we. This means there is no distance between us. As such, Reiki can be learned and done in-person or at a distance. And that stands for Student Attunement Ceremonies, too!

Yes! Attunements can be done via distance! How? Because Reiki is energy healing – and energy healing has no boundaries or time-restraints – there are no limitations on the ability to attune students from afar. Reiki healing can be done at a distance which means the ceremonies can by done at a distance too!

To further clarify, Melissa connects energetically with students (after they have confirmed their ceremony date and time with her) and performs the ceremony completely remotely. After the ceremony is done, Melissa emails all the information about it (date, time frame and so on) to each student, including any observations she made.

Yes! You can ask questions throughout the course! Melissa makes herself available to help guide her students at any point during their learning journey. Students can directly ask Melissa questions in two different ways: either (1) within the course itself using our “Lecture Discussions” feature. This allows Melissa and the student to converse within the course content itself.

And (2) via the Reiki Student Community, which allows students to chat with Melissa – and with other students if they wish – to ask questions, share experiences, find practice buddies, and more! In either scenario, Melissa will respond and converse directly with students there.
